Portable Gas Heaters Shopping Tips

Portable gas heaters are very versatile in their use. Instead of having one permanently mounted, they have the ability to be moved to those ‘one off’ locations that you would never be able to install a heater in, or that you wouldn’t want to. So, what are the best portable gas heaters for the home? We’ll talk about some of the important options to look for in a great portable heater.

  • Weight – having portable gas heaters that are lightweight can be very important depending on your use. If you plan to take your portable gas heaters camping, then you will want something that is easy to transport – not too big and bulky, and light enough for one person to load and unload.
  • BTU – You want to have a high enough BTU output that it actually heats the area you are in. To determine the amount of BTU to look for in a heater take the sq. feet of the area and multiply it by the height. Take that number and multiply it by three. This will give you the average number of BTU needed for that area.
  • Use – Will the heater be needed for extended periods of time, or will you need it only for shorter bursts. You will need to take this into account because there are some portable LPG gas heaters that will only work on the smaller one pound propane tanks. If you need longer use, you will want to make sure that you have the option to hook to a one-pound tank or a twenty-pound tank. Obviously, the one-pound tank isn’t going to last anywhere near as long as the twenty. And, outdoor propane heaters are going to need more BTU than something that you will use in a garage, for instance.

  • Safety – An important feature to look for is if the heater has the ability to shut itself off if it is tipped over. But, you will also want to shop for heaters that have passed all of the safety certifications by looking at heaters that have approved by Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTL). Never use a heater that is too large for the area, this can cause emissions to build up and could potentially be fatal. Never use a portable gas heater in an area that is not properly ventilated. And, make sure to leave plenty of room around the heater.
  • Price – You can get heaters that connect directly to the top of a propane tank, and those will generally be the most inexpensive type; starting at around $50 (US). If you want a larger more industrial type of heater with higher BTU, you must be willing to spend a little bit more money. Typically, a high BTU forced air gas heater will cost a couple hundred dollars.

There are many options to consider when you are looking for portable gas heaters for sale. But, above all make sure you keep safety in the top of your mind. From there it is a matter of determining what you plan to use the heater for the most. Once you have decided that, it is relatively easy to find portable gas heaters that will suit your needs, and for an attractive price.
